FTMO Challenge: The Discipline Guide Nobody Talks About
Search "FTMO challenge strategy" and you find hundreds of videos. Search "FTMO challenge discipline" and you find almost nothing. This is strange, because discipline is what separates traders who pass from traders who pay for resets.
FTMO rules to internalize
- Daily loss limit: 5% of initial balance
- Maximum loss: 10% of initial balance
- Profit target: 10% (Challenge), 5% (Verification)
- Minimum trading days: 4
- Time limit: 30 days (Challenge), 60 days (Verification)
The discipline framework
The 1% rule
Limit daily risk to 1%, not 5%. The 5% is your emergency stop. At 1% daily risk, you can have 10 consecutive losing days before hitting max drawdown.
The A+ filter
You do not need many trades. Before every entry, ask: "Is this A+?" If you hesitate, skip it. You only need 10 good trades at 1:2 RR with 50% win rate to pass.
Session management
Maximum 2-3 trades per day. After one loss, tighten criteria. After two losses, stop for the day.
The consistency rule
Some prop firms require that no single day accounts for too much of your total profit. Aim for 0.5-1% per day. Steady progress beats one lucky day.
The math of passing
- 10% over 30 days = 0.33% per day
- At 1% risk with 1:2 RR and 50% win rate = about 0.5% per day
- You can afford losing days and still pass
Strategy gets you into the challenge. Discipline gets you through it.
